Gliese-Jahreiss Stars Table

Stauffer et al. (2010) provides precise J2000, epoch 2000 coordinates, and cross-identifications to sources in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog for nearly all stars in the Gliese, Gliese-Jahreiss, and Woolley catalogs of nearby stars. The GJ Stars interactive table contains data from Table 1 of Stauffer et al. (2010).

The following table lists all of the data columns in the Gliese-Jahreiss (GJ) Stars table (gjstars) that can be accessed using the GJ Stars interactive table. These column names can also be specified in pre-filtered table queries.

Database
Column Name
Table Label Description Displayed String Name Limit Column
gj_name† Name

Star name from the nearby star catalog:

  • Gl = from the Gliese (1969) catalog;
  • GJ = not in Gliese (1969) but present in Gliese and Jahreiss (1979 or 1991);
  • Wo = not in any of Gliese (1969), Gliese and Jahreiss (1979 or 1991), but in Woolley et al. (1970).

alt_name† Alternate Name Star name when star appears in more than one of the nearby star catalog. For stars with both Gliese and Woolley names, the Wo name is listed; otherwise star name from the Hipparcos catalog, when available.
rastr† RA [sexagesimal] Right ascension of the star for equinox and epoch 2000 in sexagesimal format.
decstr† Dec [sexagesimal] Declination of the star for equinox and epoch 2000 in sexagesimal format.
ra RA [decimal degrees] Right ascension of the star for equinox and epoch 2000 in decimal degrees.
dec Dec [decimal degrees] Declination of the star for equinox and epoch 2000 in decimal degrees.
pmra† Proper Motion (RA) [mas/yr] Angular change in right ascension over time as seen from the center of mass of the Solar System. pmrastr pmralim
pmdec† Proper Motion (Dec) [mas/yr] Angular change in declination over time as seen from the center of mass of the Solar System. pmdecstr pmdeclim
tm_name† 2MASS Name Name of the star as given by the 2MASS catalog.
j2m† J-band (2MASS) [mag] Brightness of the star as measured using the J (2MASS) band in units of magnitudes.
h2m† H-band (2MASS) [mag] Brightness of the star as measured using the H (2MASS) band in units of magnitudes.
k2m† Ks-band (2MASS) [mag] Brightness of the star as measured using the Ks (2MASS) band in units of magnitudes.
gj_comment† Comments

Comment flags:

  • c = Star is not in the Gliese and Jahreiss (1991) catalog;
  • d = Not listed as a member of a binary system in Gliese (1969), Gliese and Jahreiss (1979) or Woolley et al. (1970) catalogs, binary companion identified subsequent to Gliese and Jahreiss (1991);
  • e = The secondary star is separated from the primary by less than 5" and HIP/2MASS positions are not available for both stars, listed as one;
  • f = GJ binary where 2MASS photometry is probably blended, most separations < 5";
  • g = Pleiades member (distance ~ 133 pc);
  • h = See appendix (in Stauffer et al. 2010) for additional comments.

coordsrc† Coordinate Source Source of the position of the star, either the Hipparcos or 2MASS catalogs, or an additional source such as the LSPM catalog (Lepine et al. 2005)

† Default column: These columns display in the interactive table when the table is first loaded, and when Reset Filters is clicked.
