The 20pc Census Contributed Data at the Exoplanet Archive

Project Overview

The "20pc Census" is a volume-limited census of ~3,600 stars and brown dwarfs within 20pc of the Sun. The project utilizes a combination of all-sky and targeted observations coupled with an extensive literature search and the efforts of citizen scientists through Backyard Worlds to build a comprehensive list of stars and brown dwarfs within 20pc of the Sun. The census has been used to quantify the initial mass function for the mass range M=0.01 M through M=8 M. The census has been published in Kirkpatrick, J. D. et al. (2024).

Data Holdings

The primary data product from Kirkpatrick, J. D. et al. 2024 is contained in Table 4 in the paper and provides a summary of the 20pc census, including aliases cross-matched across more than a dozen catalogs, positions and proper motions, estimated masses and temperatures, spectral types, optical and infrared magnitudes, and stellar multiplicity heirarchy, including all of the references for each of the parameters. The primary table contains codes (e.g., Abt2006) for general references and for references regarding the astrometry, masses, photometry, and spectral types. The reference files contain the codes used in the primary table file and the associated web link to the ADS entry. If there is more than one reference, the references are separated by commas. Some references come with an additional note that is also separated by a comma.
